Ranking Member Thompson Statement on the President’s Preliminary Budget Request for DHS

(WASHINGTON) – Today, Rep. Bennie G. Thompson (D-MS), Ranking Member of the Committee on Homeland Security, released the following statement on the President’s preliminary budget request for the Department of Homeland Security:

“The President’s preliminary budget request would inflict enormous harm on the country and our homeland security. Not only does it call for extreme cuts that would decimate FEMA, CISA, and TSA, but when the administration tries to justify these cuts it has to resort to lies because there is nothing to justify them outside a right-wing echo chamber. This is not government efficiency – or ending waste or fraud – it is the purposeful undermining of national security agencies that Trump – and right-wing groups like the Heritage Foundation – have always had it out for. Simply put: these cuts are purely political and not based on the threats that we face as a Nation. We all know that cyber threats and natural disasters are on the rise and becoming costlier – ignoring this simple fact while laying out your priorities puts the country at more risk.

“Lastly, it is vile that the administration is purposefully trying to redirect funding away from blue states to red states for political purposes. Sadly, the President has no interest in serving all Americans or the country as a whole. To him, the Federal budget is to be used to help his voters – and inflict pain on everyone else. Thankfully, we have already seen bipartisan opposition to the budget request. It must be rejected outright.”
